Our Impact

Evidence – Qualitative

Young people we work with said, “After music today I feel…”

It made me feel calmer and more relaxed about everything and really happy.

Very happy that I have the opportunity to try and learn new things whilst I am here.

I feel like I have achieved something, and I focused for the first time in a while.

I felt good and happy. Before you came I was down and you cheered me up. Thank you.

Happy and calm. Thank you! I really enjoyed it and had lots of fun.

Parents said, “After music today I feel…”

I never saw my daughter have so much fun in hospital before. It was amazing to see her engage and explore.

Grateful. In the middle of his session the doctor came for his obs, which usually end up with F screaming and crying, but she played her guitar quietly and F listened and was calm.

I cannot tell you what the wonderful session meant to H who suffers with huge anxiety around certain parts of her stay.

Music Therapy is so important for children to be able to express what’s happening in their lives…to make the children feel happier and safe.

My daughter really enjoys music therapy, it really brightens her day. We see a massive improvement throughout the day when she has had a session.
Thank you so much for providing this service, it makes a huge difference.

We had a fantastic experience with the music therapist at Southampton Hospital. Our baby thoroughly enjoyed the sessions and it helped us to give him some normalising activities whilst in a very abnormal situation/setting. Many thanks!

Evidence – Quantitative

Our parent outcome measure survey found:

  • 100% of parents surveyed would like more music therapy for their child
  • 96.5% of parents found that music therapy helped improve their child’s mood while in hospital
  • 96.5% of parents found that music therapy provided comfort for their child while in hospital
  • 96% of parents said that music therapy helped to distract their child from pain or discomfort
  • 100% of parents said that music therapy provided an opportunity for play during their child’s hospital stay
  • 100% of parents said that music therapy made hospital and easier/ happier place for their child
  • 96% of parents said that music therapy helped with their child’s level of anxiety of being in hospital
  • 89% of parents said that music therapy helped reduce their child’s level of isolation
  • 97% of parent’s said that music therapy also help to reduce their own stress levels

Evidence – Academic Research

A systematic review of randomised control trials of the impact of music therapy in general paediatric inpatient settings conducted in 2011 summarised that music therapy can enhance cognition, facilitate communication, and reduce the effects of trauma through enhancing coping strategies for hospitalised children (Treurnicht et al., 2011.)

Other studies have looked at specific outcomes in distinct populations – for example self measured pain scores in children with cancer – with significant positive impact, however the research evidence is too broad to summarise here. We would happily provide further information on request.
